About the Arbor District

The Arbor District is located in the old west side of Carbondale, a short walk from Southern Illinois University and Carbondale Memorial Hospital. Most of the homes date to the period between WWI and 1960, although homes dating to the 1850s exist in the Historic District along Walnut and Main Streets. It is an easy walk to a major grocery store (Oakland and Main) and to City Hall (Illinois and Walnut) and the downtown shopping district.

Carbondale has many amenities. On the west side of town, Murdale Shopping Center houses an organic and natural food store, the Neighborhood Coop, a marvelous International Grocery with an astonishing selection of foods from around the world; a green grocer, a bakery, a good liquor and wine store, and an excellent hardware and general store, among other shops. A truck loaded with frozen fish parks weekly in the Murdale lot.

The Saturday Farmer's Market is held in the adjoining Westtown Mall during growing season. A Post Office various services are in the Mall.

Other locally owned restaurants and shops can be found along Main St. and in other locations around town.

The east side has a wide array of "big box" and chain stores, anchored by the University Mall.
