A few of these sturdy concrete block corn cribs remain, dotting the central Illinois prairie. Most, like this cluster of old buildings, mark a farmstead. When this crib was new, the road was dotted with families.

T
his is now an industrial landscape, marked by well-maintained but unpopulated roads every quarter of a mile, laid out on a grid. Electric and telephone wires bring power to the remaining farms.
