Amish settled around Arthur, in Moultrie County, Illinois, in 1865. The initial settlement has grown to around 4,000.

T
he landscape is strikingly different from the surrounding region: Unlike the vast fields and sparsely settled roadways characteristic of industrial agriculture in central Illinois, in the Amish region large, multigenerational farmsteads dot the countryside. Inside the heart of the Amish settlement, no electric or telephone wires dissect the sky.
