People from the eastern mountains settled the wooded, hilly regions of Illinois throughout the Nineteenth Century. This log house, photographed in the 1920's with its porch, kitchen "el", smoke house, and garden is typical of the homes that once sheltered hill farmers.

The grounds were groomed by chickens, trod down by feet and hooves. The yards were orderly , laid out in a functional aesthetic. This photo was shot across the winter garden.
