The John N. Rhodes family bought land in Union County in 1849. built this house around 1850. This photo was taken in 1898. The house was enlarged and covered wtih clapboards a few years later. It remained inhabited until around 1984.

The history of the farm is documented in "The Transformation of Rural Life: Southern Illinois 1890-1990" by Jane Adams.

The handmade picket fence encloses the house yard, with its gardens and poultry, and other small stock. The wife managed the house and its grounds, while her husband managed the more distant fields.
